All school students count their years by the academic year, then college students do the same, and teachers too! I never really got out of that habit. So, my summer is rapidly coming to an end, and my second year of teaching is approaching quicker than I would like.  I have such mixed emotions for the year to come. I am excited to have my first year out of the way and to get a fresh start. At the same time, I am afraid that this year will bring many of the same struggles and frustrations that I battled day in and day out of last year.  For those of you who aren’t teachers you may not understand why or how this profession could be so tough…I mean we only work 9 months….get holidays all the time….and get off at 3:30 right?   That’s what I thought before this year, and I apologize to each and every teacher for my past assumptions.  My mom always told me not to assume…she was right as usual!  Teaching tested my character, confidence, self discipline, and motivation every day of last school year.  I can’t say that I handled everything exactly as I would have liked to, but I did my best at the time.  My little glimmer of hope during last year was that my second year would be better.  How could it be worse? Well, here I am and next year is here.  I’m scared to start for fear of repeating the past, but determined that my year will only go as good as I allow it. During this next month please keep me and all other teachers you know in your thoughts, I promise we don ‘t have it quite as easy as you might think!
